Hotel Zaguan Del Darro, Granada The river Darro is the stream that separates the Alhambra (surely one of the most famous landmarks in the world) from the Albayzín (the second-most famous part of Granada). It is here on a narrow street alongside the river that we find the Hotel Zaguán del Darro. Ideally located at the foot of the Albayzin, within walking distance of the Alhambra, this historic building is perfectly placed to enjoy the amazing history of Granada and to appreciate the delightful environment that exists here in the deep valley of the Darro.

At the heart of this noble house (dating from 1563) is the patio, a part of the hotel that is so unique it has been listed by UNESCO as a place of special artistic interest. This is a space to sit and relax, a pleasant oasis of cool from a blazing summer sun, or a cosy hideaway in winter. Pick a book from the shelves and browse, accompanied by the trickle of water from the 16th century stone and bronze fountain. The wooden galleries that surround the patio are supported on marble columns from the Sierra Elvira and Roman stone columns with Corinthian capitols. Overhead there is a screen that can be opened to the clear blue sky or closed if necessary to protect the furnishings from the elements. The patio is approached from the street via an ancient hallway (the "zaguan") where the rock walls, stone floors and wooden beams have all been faithfully preserved.

The Hotel Zaguan looks straight along the valley towards the Alhambra, so nearly all the windows provide a glimpse of the citadel, the Alcazaba, the Torre de Velas, the bell tower, etc.

The thirteen guest rooms are light and spacious, and each is named after an important event or person in the history of Granada, Muley Hazén from the Moorish era, or Fernando el Católico from the Christian époque. Each room offers air-conditioning, heating, TV and a mini-bar. It also offers individuality, comfort and a key location in the heart of the old city.

Restaurant:

The cafe-bar offers guests a variety of typical dishes and tapas. For dinners, the hotel can recommend and book a suitable restaurant from the many that line the banks of the Darro river and extend up the hill of the Albaicin. For breakfast, choose from the hotel cafeteria or take a stroll out to one of the nearby cafes.

A Word From the Owner:

"The first priority of our staff is to provide you, our guests, with the discrete personal attention that you need and deserve. After that, the fabric of the hotel and the privileged location speak for themselves."

What We Say:

Fountain spoutTake your time. Dedicate at least a day to the Alhambra. Then spare some time to stroll the streets alongside the river Darro. Last but not least, sit back in the centre of your very own World Heritage Site and soak up the history and atmosphere of a house that has been here since not long after the Christian re-conquest of Granada.

Guest Feedback:

"Great location, helpful staff who spoke English, nice room with an 'original' feel and old furniture - a far cry from the sterile, uniform rooms in many modern hotels. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay." H. O'B.
