Hotel Viura is a brand new hotel that really is like no other. As the architect eschewed all thoughts of vertical and horizontal, he created an ultra-modern fantasy that sits remarkably easily alongside an ultra-traditional church in the centre of the village of Villabuena de Alava. The tumbling pile of superimposed blocks is liberally sprinkled with balconies, terraces and huge windows that all make the most of the views of the village and the surrounding scenery.

Inside, the hotel is just slightly more conventional, with stylish contemporary furnishings and materials giving an atmosphere of unadulterated luxury. For relaxing, there is the spacious bar, the lounge and library or the glorious outside terraces with their views of the nearby church of San Andrés and the distant Sierra de Cantabria mountains. For those of a more energetic disposition, the hotel has its own gym.

The spacious bedrooms all reflect the same high levels of design value, as well as comprehensive facilities like wi-fi internet, flatscreen television with DVD, and a minibar.

Situated in Villabuena de Álava in the Rioja Alavesa, Viura is a perfect base for discovering La Rioja. It is only 10 minutes away from such famous wine cellars as Ysios and Marqués de Riscal.

Restaurant:

The monochromatic decor of the elegant restaurant is softened by the rich oak of the wine barrels suspended from the ceiling and the huge panoramic windows. Meals are a gastronomic delight of Riojan and Basque cuisine with some extra creative touches as one would expect from such an avant gard hotel. Equally to be expected in the centre of La Rioja is the fantastic wine list supervised by the hotel’s own sommelier.

Placing such extravagant contemporary architecture alongside a 16th century church and the rest of the village could have been a disaster. Instead it is an aesthetic triumph.
