Between the sea and the mountains, enjoying a most privileged position in the Cantabrian hills, we find the Posada Aire de Ruesga. For many years the seat of the Villa-Setién family, this was the birthplace of Don Jerónimo de Villa Setién y de la Lasta Zorrilla, who went on to become the governor of Jepusclusa in Mexico. Today, it has been the object of a rigorous restoration to provide a hotel that offers an unforgettable welcome.
You enter the hotel through a massive stone doorway, with the elaborate coat-of-arms of the Villa-Setién family carved into the wall above. Inside you find a comfortable lounge with reading area that was once the stables to the house. Outside, there are terraces and verandas to enable guests to sit and enjoy the views all around, including the nearby 17th century church of San Esteban de Mentera. Beyond again, the gardens extend to 6000 m2, planted with a variety of native and exotic species.
Aire de Ruesga has ten spacious bedrooms, each decorated and named to reflect a particular cultural or regional theme. Guests might choose between the majestic colonial style of the Aire Colonial, the flavour of the Far East in the Aire Oriental or perhaps keep things closer to home with the distinguished elegance of the Aire Inglés. Whatever, each one has been appointed with painstaking care. The Superior rooms have their own separate sitting area, and the Suite also has its own balcony.
This is a location of pure mountain air, close to the Natural Park of Collados de Asón, twenty minutes from the beaches at Laredo, and mid-way between the cities of Santander and Bilbao. As well as finding your own entertainment in the mountains or villages or on the coast, the hotel is able to arrange such activities as paintball, quads and white-water canoeing.
