Here in Laguardia, in the heart of La Rioja Alavesa, this unique hotel blends wine and travel into its own particular mix. The building which is today the hotel, was once the Antigua Bodega (Old Winery) where Don Cosme Palacio began to produce the famous wines of Bodegas Palacio more than 100 years ago. Built in the second half of the 19th Century, using golden-coloured local stone typical of Riojan architecture of the time, it was renovated in 1990 to become the warm and intimate hotel we know today.

The old winery has just thirteen rooms, all bright, spacious and decorated individually, each room named after a famous grape variety.. All are provided with telephone, TV, private bathroom… and every sort of detail to make your stay more comfortable.

Bodega Cosme Palacio has various lounges: the winter garden, with its original stone walls and a magnificent glass ceiling; the cellar room, surrounded by the old vats and barrels of the winery, and the salon, on the top floor, often used for company meetings.

Naturally enough there is a comfortable dining room with oak-panelled walls where you can enjoy delicious seasonal cuisine of the La Rioja region, based on freshness and authenticity of flavours.

Finally, the hotel has its library, with information concerning tourist routes, wine-tasting courses, guided visits to the winery… everything to make your stay an unforgettable one.

Restaurant:

In a location dedicated to Bacchanalian pleasures, it would be a surprise indeed if the Hotel Cosme Palacio failed to live up to the highest standards of dining. Cosme Palacio's young chef Javier Ramos will take you on a gastronomic tour without ever leaving your table. And of course, you will have the opportunity to accompany your dinner with any of the magnificent wines from Hijos de Barceló.
The restaurant is closed Sunday evenings and Mondays.

Situated right in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa, Bodega Cosme Palacio is the perfect start to any tour of the region. Right on the doorstep is the medieval walled town of Laguardia, the whole town being one large historic monument. The narrow streets are filled with authentic historic buildings and there are two churches, St John the Baptist and St Mary of the Kings, where you can appreciate the different styles of ecclesiastical architecture from Romanesque to Renaissance. In the latter church you will find a portico that is renowned throughout Europe, carved originally in the 14th century and coloured in the 17th.

The Rioja area is an ideal centre for walking, hiking or cycling, and horse-riding is also available locally.

For those prepared to drive a little further, Vitoria and Bilbao offer interesting visits, including, of course, the Guggenheim museum.
