What will the weather be like?

For hundreds of years La Cartuja was both a Carthusian monastery and a guesthouse for travellers. Today it continues it's dual life as both a Centre of Contemporary Art and Culture and a hotel for travellers. Carmen Ladrón de Guevara has made this place her life's work, having restored it from dereliction and turned it into a location of international repute. Hotel La Cartuja de Cazalla

Artists and thinkers are welcomed, taking the place of the monks, creating works of art, which is the spiritual food in these modern days. The rooms of the Guesthouse are decorated with works by visiting artists. Painters, sculptors and musicians can sometimes offer their art in exchange for their stay. The Centre of Contemporary Culture includes an art gallery with paintings by the resident artists, many of which can be purchased by visitors, and a permanent collection of Spanish and Latin American art. Each evening after dinner, everyone is welcome to participate in the "tertulia", a peaceful forum of discussion.

The hotel offers eight comfortable double rooms and two singles, all with en-suite bathrooms with either a bath or shower, located in the ancient guesthouse. There are also four junior suites in the Cloisters which were originally the monk's cells, but there is definitely no question of monastic austerity here. Finally, the Gardener's cottage in the grounds has two bedrooms, a living room with kitchen area, a bathroom and a separate small shower room.

Outside there is a swimming pool, and another pool filled with natural spring water. The grounds extend to about 100 acres, mostly woodland criss-crossed with tracks and pathways, where you will find over 100 different species of birds.

In continuation of the Carthusian tradition, La Cartuja de Cazalla offers a peaceful refuge from the noise and stress of the modern world. Naturally therefore, there is no telephone in the rooms. There is a television room in the old guesthouse for the use of all guests, and the suites have a television in the room.

Restaurant:

Dine with Carmen in her home next door, sampling local dishes using home-grown organic produce from the hotel's own gardens and fields. Afterwards feel free to stay for the "tertulia", a chat around the table sharing knowledge and ideas.

What We Say:

"Unique" is an over-worked word, but we really must use it to describe La Cartuja de Cazalla. It's not so much a hotel as a sanctuary for those of an artistic and spiritual disposition. For those who want to take part in it's unique events, La Cartuja is, well, unique. For those who wish to just pass through and be touched by all that is happening here, that is something special too.

Customer Feedback:

"I had the pleasure of staying briefly in La Cartuja. It's a surprising and completely different, unique cultural experience. Go there and I'm sure you won't be dissapointed." A.R.

"This is a place to rest, re-charge, think, be nostalgic, re-connect with yourself, to be with the person you love. My thanks to the staff and especially to the director Doña Carmen Ladrón de Guevara." J.M.

We will welcome your comments after you have visited this hotel. Send feedback
