The owners of Aldori Landetxea modestly state that it has "never been an architecturally extraordinary house", but they've certainly made up for any perceived deficits in the straightforward exterior, with a fascinating devotion to the interior. Shiny minimalist elements aside, there are lots of touches in the guest rooms and throughout the building that go beyond an empty and plain contemporary design, and into the territory of a very particular one, which appeals to us a lot. Aldori Landetxea, Muxica

The six guest rooms include one suite. The presentation of these includes features such as fascinating murals, tiling which befits the rest of the room creating a satisfying unified whole and white-painted beamed ceilings, adding a modern look to an old-fashioned part of the building. The public areas continue the effortlessly cool theme: colours are generally low-key, but occasionally there is a splash of strength in the likes of a pink chair or a plum sofa. Lighting is also used sparingly, with little spotlights which add a slight sense of theatre to the stage.

Some of the rooms have rather unique balconies; large apertures puncturing the sloping roof to open up a charming little private space to the sun. The surroundings of the building make a sort of 'infinity garden', as there is so much of the hotel's land around that it appears to drift off into hills.

Aldori Landetxea is only a half-hour drive from the intriguing city of Bilbao and less than half an hour from the coast..

A Word From the Owner:

"Aldori has never been an architecturally extraordinary house; it however largely compensates for this due to the number of persons who lived here and left their stamp both on the house and on our latest history.

Far from standing out against its setting, even after its thorough restoration, the house blends perfectly into an infinite landscape, with the garden extending to the forest and hills. It thus forms a point of inflection and reflection between Sollube, Oiz, Bizkargi and San Miguel de Ereñozar.

Nearby Amenities:

Aldori Landetxea Walking and cycling: The Basque Country is rich in opportunities for enjoying the great outdoors. Try the rolling hills of the countryside near the hotel, or the more mountainous terrain a little further inland (Durango, for example). Or wander along the edges of the estuary between Mundaka and Murieta.

Travel along the rugged coast of Vizcaya, visiting the pretty little fishing villages and seaside resorts along the the way (Plentzia, Bakio, Bermeo, Mundaka, for example).

Golf: As ever, you're never far from a golf course.
Surfing: Try surfing in the long waves of the estuary near Mundaka
Piragua boat trips
Beaches: Lots of lovely beaches along this piece of coast. The nearest is just 15 km away.

Guernica: See the ancient tree and the slightly newer Meeting House of the Basque Parliament. There is also an interesting museum here.

Bilbao: The Guggenheim Museum is the most famous attraction, and rightly so. However, take time to walk around the Casco Viejo (old quarter), see the Basque Country museum, potter down to the beach at Las Arenas, have a meal in one of the restaurants in Getxo, or ride up the funicular railway to see the old mining villages near Trapagaran.

From the Guestbook:

"We have just spent 4 nights at the Hotel Aldori on our honeymoon and I cannot speak highly enough about the hotel. The owner has worked so hard to transform his family's farmhouse into a luxury, boutique style hotel and he has done it to such a high standard without losing any of the charm and authenticity. Everything in the hotel is of the highest quality and would befit any top end boutique hotel in the UK, plus you are then served amazing fresh breakfasts with local eggs, Iberian ham, bread and fruit. A real treat.

We used Aldori as a base and drove out each day to explore the amazing surrounding countryside, cliffs, fishing villages, churches and the best beaches. It is also within easy distance of Bilbao airport.

Finally, just a quick note about the owner, who could not have been more welcoming and helpful.

I would definitely recommend this hotel as a great rural hideaway!" Jen, London

Excellent and charming rural hotel in beautiful surroundings. This hotel has family-style rooms and a personal management style, which makes your stay a wonderful one. Melqui, Zaragoza, Spain

Lovely place designed with great care, ran by lovely people. A real luxury stay. No buts. Erreka Gorri, Navarra, Spain

My husband, my daughter and I spent an outstanding weekend in this rural house. The owners made us feel at home and this is something priceless. So I recommend without a doubt this house for everything; it's surroundings, tranquility and the friendliness of Egoitz and Maider. We will come back for sure! Ana Grajal, Palencia, Spain
